MedWorld Cool Links for Medical Students
These are MedWorld Cool Sites with stuff we think medical students and physicians will find useful.
We even rated them for you!
Our scale goes from (okay) to (must visit this site NOW!!)

Cool Site of the Moment
Digital Anatomist for WWW
These people from the University of Washington have really achieved a breakthough in using the WWW for interactively teaching anatomy. Using MRI scans and most importantly computer reconstructions of organs based on cryosections, this site offers a different perspective of the organs you see in the dissection room. In addition, you are interactively quizzed on anatomy, and are provided feedback throughout your visit. Brain atlases (vital for Neuro 200 Winter quarter) and an atlas of the thoracic viscera are currently available.

Biochemistry
Navigating Metabolic Pathways
This site looks UGLY, but it may actually be useful. At first the biochemical pathways look like a bad ascii version of figures from Stryer's book (hey, you're at Stanford, you can always just give Stryer a ring! I'm sure he'd be more then happy to tell you everything you ever wanted to know about the pentose-phosphate shunt!). But the real gem here is the list of 660 enzymes by name with links to what they do! Certain to be a time saver on those biochemistry problem sets!

Histology

Vanderbilt Histology Lessons
Vanderbilt has put together a decent site with good images and content about blood (hematopoesis), epithelium, peripheral nervous tissue, and salivary glands and the exocrine pancreas. Lots of good content and nice slides and EM (though they could have done a better job at labelling figures.) Not very interactive though, no quizes or slide identification excercises. The brown paper bag with histo slides is probably the best bet for quick and dirty slide identification on the histo final!
'Lumen' - Histology and Cell Biology
This sadly, could have been a useful site...It has great slides and captions so you can learn the ultrastructural detail. It doesn't have as much conceptual content as the Vanderbilt site, so you can't really "learn" histo here. In addition, the slides are so badly indexed that you have a hard time finding what you're looking for. On the positive side, images are optimized for the Web and served very quickly.
Histology for Medicine and Dentistry
This is purely a reference site with a good selection of light microscopy and EM slides. No text or explanations, so its probably of limited value for medical students. The server is also a bit slow on providing images.

Microbiology

On-line Microbiology Course
This site was intended to be a reader for learning medical microbiology, but you're much better sticking to the Stanford course syllabus. There are some good parts of this page, but its missing lots of sections and the continuity is spotty at times. There is also a noticible lack of microscopy pictures of bacteria and fungii (we were generous and threw in an extra star for the author's hand-made cartoons though!).

Neurology

Whole Brain Atlas
An incredible collection of MR images of the brain. A well designed and easy to use web site that includes "Tours" of pathological conditions as well as MPEG movies. Also offers a self-quiz on anatomical structures. The on-line atlas has sections on normal brain, cerebrovascular disease, neoplastic disease, degenerative disease, and inflammatory/infectious disease.

Pathology

UW-Madison Pathology Course
This is an pretty cool site. Check out the laboratory slides and the CPCs! The slides alone are worth visiting this site, they are very well labelled with arrows pointing out what you should know! This should be very useful for any pathology student!
WebPath Database of Pathology Images
Another great resource for anyone in path at the University of Utah.

Radiology

Radiology Teaching Files
A complete collection of images with cases at the University of Washington.
Nuclear Medicine Teaching Files
Dozens of cases from the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at the Washington University School of Medicine.
Joint Program in Nuclear Medicine Teaching Files
Nuclear medicine cases from Harvard.
Virtual Hospital's Radiology Textbooks
Very thorough references for topics such as diffuse lung disease, GI, joints, muscle, lung anatomy, and back pain.

Clinical Medicine: General

The Interactive Patient
This site is really worth a visit. You get to ask questions, perform a physical exam and diagnose a patient using a very interactive interface. This site was a "cool site of the day" and "top 5% point survey." Visit this site NOW!!!
The Virtual Hospital
This is one slick site. It has a lot of good clinical content as well, and the pages and images are all professionally done. Among the features you can choose from are "multimedia textbooks" which are Web pages about everything from lung anatomy to emporiatrics (travel medicine). It also has TONS of patient simulations including sounds and quicktime movies. There is too much in this site to mention here, so Visit this site NOW!!!
Medical Diseases on the Web
A very nice and thorough index of Web sites about any and every kind of disease know to man...Nicely organized, it should help you get the latest scoop on the disease your studying (either in pathology or when you're researching topics for your PCM presentations!).
Primary Care Teaching Modules
Check out this site if your interested in academic reviews, quizes and clinical case presentations on everything from constipation to urinary tract infections. Except for a couple of quizes, this site is not very interactive, but the reviews are well written and indexed. This site was put together by Stanford in collaboration with UCSF.

Clinical Medicine: Specific

Clinician's Guide to Asthma
This is a good source of information about asthma and has lots of information materials which can be printed out and used for patient education. In fact, the main focus of this page is on teaching the clinician how to instruct their patients on managing their asthma. Clinical students may find this information useful.
Breast Diseases from McGill University
A pretty good place to learn about the pathophysiology of breast disease and the clinical correlations. Some sections are very spares, however, and the site is definately still under construction. Some students may find it useful.
Geriatric Medicine Primer for Medical Students
This is a good starting place to learn about how to deal with older patients and what to look for and be sensitive towards when approching an elderly patient. This site also makes good use of interactive quizes to emphasize important concepts.
Ophthalmology Cases from Massachusetts Eye and Ear
This is a good site to get interesting information about recent interesting cases in ophthalmology. Should be of use to a clinical medical student on ophthalmology clerkship.
Dermatology On-line
This site has a lot of dermatology-related photos and a good search engine to give you exactly what you want, but its a bit sparce on conceptual knowledge of dermatology and a bit too specifically-targeted for all but the gunner medical student on dermatology clerkship.

Medical Student Organizations and Resources

MedWorld
The one-and-only WWW resource a medical student will ever need! (hey, this is our page, we're entitled to a little shameless self-adulation). Our goal is to provide medical students with easy access to advice and information about all aspects of the medical training process. We will be updating this "cool sites" page, along with our ratings and descriptions, so that its easier and faster for medical students to surf the net and get the important resources they are looking for. Be sure to check out our bulletin boards!
The American Medical Association
This is a good place to find out more about what the AMA is doing and to get the latest edition of JAMA on-line. But thats about it. The Medical student section is, well..., pathetic! It really needs work to be of interest to medical students (we took one star away out of sheer rebuke that the AMA would have such pathetic medical student resources).
Asian American Medical Students (at Ohio State)
This site obviously has limited interest and its very focused on students at Ohio State. But it does mention some of the national groups organized for Asian medical students, including AAMSnet and APAMSA.
Student 2 Student
A fairly new site started by the publishers of the book primarily for medical students who are studying for the boards. Includes bulletin boards on studying and much of the text of the ever-popular "First Aid for the USMLE Step I."
