Its early July and my third year of residency has commenced. Ben Taub is very busy in the summer months, especially with "face" trauma call every third night. My first call night was busy. In addition to performing an abscess tonsillectomy in a 35yo insulin dependent diabetic, I saw an isolated, nondisplaced zygoma fracture, a mandibular ramus/subcondylar fracture, an HIV+ odontogenic abscess, a woman with "stridor", a complex ear avulsion/cartilage injury, and a foreign body in the ear to name a few. I was asleep by 0230 with teeth shiny clean from a brillow pad toothbrush from a patient toiletry packet. I was pleasantly surprised when I awoke at 0600 to find that the shower had hot water and that the towel in the corner of the bathroom floor was cleaner than I imagined.
As for the flow of the week , I operate Tue, Wed, Thur and help run clinic Mon,Fri. Its a sweet deal for a junior level resident to be in the OR more than the clinic. I'm working with Mark on the Green service which covers general ENT. Rance and Ed run the Blue / Head and Neck cancer service. They believe in lunch which is a refeshing change from previous surgical services.
The 4th of July was relaxing. We tanned and swam at the apartment pool and did the picnic/firework thing with Rob and Nancy. We biked to Herman Park and pulled up next to the firework launch pad and enjoyed the smoke, noise and bright colors. I felt patriotic and tired. We biked home through Rice University campus safely. Friday was a light day in clinic. I sutured a stab wound to the nose which was not appreciated by the EC chief earlier in the previous evening. I saw a lady with bilateral vocal cord paralysis. We went to Thomas Street clinic (HIV patients) in the afternoon with Dr. Stewart and this was not too busy either. We ate lunch at Treebeards beforehand...excellent red beans and rice. Kathleen and I saw the Rock...+/-....but Nicolas Cage is still one of my favorite actors. The biggest thrill of the weekend was acquiring a Time/Life collection of Baroque, Romantic and Classical music records from the 1/2 price book/record store during their 1/2 price sale...yes...I still have my record player from high school.
Take care,
Peter
