I'm still terrified. But now I'm in medical school. I shouldn't be writing; I should be studying. We've just finished the second week of classes. Time is flying by. Already. Our first exam is on September 24th. That's less than two weeks away.
The second years assure us that the work will get done. I'm trying to trust them. However, I'm skeptical. There's a lot of work. But I'm surprised. I love this.
Anatomy is not a chore; it's wonderful and exciting. Our professor drinks nectar and lives on Mount Olympus. He knows everything. Really. He's also a great teacher. It's obvious he loves what he's doing too.
I'm lucky. I have three lab partners whom I like and can learn from. They have named me "Fascia Queen" in honor of the talent I seem to have for ripping fascia off muscles. Charming nickname. My lab partners are Histo Man (HM), Renaissance Man (RM) and Anatomy Goddess (AG).
They are all very smart and much younger than I am. Histo Man knows a a lot about histology. He's also a very nice person, willing to share what he knows with the rest of us. At some medical schools, that would be unusual. Temple tries to deemphasize competition. So far, it's working. Most of my classmates (and I) really want to help each other. We'll have to if we want to live through this without going nuts.
Renaissance Man knows a lot about Latin and Greek literature. He's helping us understand why those muscles are named the way they are. "Flexor carpi ulnaris" really means "ulnar wrist flexor." Wow. That helps. RM doesn't just know literature though. His knowledge is encyclopedic. He knows what the insurance term, "moral hazard" means. He took an insurance class at Wharton. I'm sure he knows stuff about a lot of things, stuff I'd like to know.
Anatomy Goddess is very smart and very well prepared. She is someone I can aspire to be like. At first she scared me. She was so well prepared. That's something the rest of us can't find the time to do, at least well. But AG is another person who graciously shares the work she's done with the rest of us. Then she thanks us for the time we have spent with her! If I pass anatomy (and I'm not at all certain I will), I'll owe AG a lot.
Speaking of anatomy, it's ten o'clock. I should study, at least for a while. I have a lot to learn.
There's not enough time to learn it.
